SILENCE
After: Pendle Hill Retreat on December 29, 2023
Ingrid Bruck, United States

silence
inner space
listens

ever so lightly
through the walls
as if from a distance

knocks
a mob of caw-cawing
in the world outside

a lone songbird
rejects the racket
with one singular squawk

back-at-you
don't care if you don't like it
i'm staying just where i am

outer silence fades
into the flickering sounds
of reflection

SILENT NIGHT
Excerpt: Ingrid's Daysong of February 18, 2023
Ingrid Bruck, United States

winter silence
presses against
black window panes

next to the fireplace, a pile of split logs
inside the hearth, ashes removed,
crumpled paper balls
kindling in the grate
a match strike

lit candles waver
wet wood spits
warmth fills the space
spills on my face
fills every corner
of the great room

crackle & flame
heats the stillness
a nightsong poem
overflows
